The NRL for Listeria monocytogenes works with the Ministries of Labour, Health and Social Policies to:

  • define the monitoring plan for Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella spp. in pork products for export to the USA and data management through the ICARUS information system;
  • manage ring trials among the official test laboratories (Istituti Zooprofilattici Sperimentali) carrying out microbiological analysis of pork products prepared by food companies authorised to export to the USA. The ring trials are organised in order to monitor the technical skills of the test laboratories, thus guaranteeing the equivalence of certificates issued by the laboratories involved;
  • develop laboratory activities and collect data on food consumption and customs, in order to enable a risk analysis for those food categories at greatest risk of Listeria monocytogenes contamination, especially ready to eat (RTE) products and cheeses.

Participate in the microbiological criteria workgroup of the European Commission Directorate General for Health and Consumer Affairs (DG SANCO).
