The NRL for Listeria monocytogenes carries out research under the following projects, funded by the Ministries of Labour, Health and Social Policies:

  • Risk analysis of Salmonella spp., Listeria monocytogenes, and ochratoxin ingestion for consumers of pork products: Parma Ham production chain;
  • Study of intra-species relationships of pathogens isolated from humans, animals and foods, through phenotyping and biomolecular techniques;
  • Development of an integrated epidemiological monitoring system for pathogens:  Campylobacter jejuni, Campylobacter coli, Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus MR and Vibrio spp.;
  • Development of quantitative Real-time PCR methods for Salmonella spp. and Listeria monocytogenes quantification in food matrices;
  • Development of a diagnostic system for bacterial and viral zoonotic agents and their pathogenicity factors, to be applied in the pork production chain;-            Integrated food risk assessment system;
  • Analysis of risk factors associated with thermotolerant Listeria monocytogenes and Campylobacter in production chains and studies of the pathogenesis of autoimmunity in Guillain-Barrè syndrome;
  • Development of a monitoring network for the main food-borne zoonoses, for the study of the sources and mechanisms of infection and refinement of novel methods to prevent these diseases in humans.
